Food-service equipment distribution (B2B/B2C)

Upgrading a B2B store across several platform versions — without stopping sales

A food-service equipment distributor's store ran on a platform version no longer receiving security fixes. We prepared a multi-version jump — with new dependency management, search and theme — and a blue-green rollout plan.

The challenge

The store ran on a platform version that had long stopped receiving security patches. Modules installed over the years directly into the application directory, an outdated PHP and a search engine no longer supported by newer platform releases meant that any in-place upgrade risked halting sales.

Approach

  • An inventory of every module and customisation: what is needed, what has a newer version, what must be rewritten and what can go.
  • A move to Composer — all dependencies declared and reproducible in every environment.
  • A new environment with current PHP, search and caching, built alongside the existing one.
  • A new theme compatible with the current platform version, instead of patching the old one.
  • A blue-green rollout — the new version starts in parallel, data is synchronised, and switching traffic (or rolling back) takes minutes.

Status

The project is in progress. We will publish the results after the production switch.
